Remember this ditty?
“Ako ang kapitbahay, kapitbahay nyo. Laging handang tumulong sa inyo. Kilala niyo ako, kilala niyo ako. Ako ang kapitbahay, kapitbahay ninyo.”
If this sounds familiar, then you’re a ‘Batang Batibot’ like me.

The defunct ’80s popular children’s educational show “Batibot” will be getting a jump-start as the program is being revived in its new home on TV5, premiering this November. The local counterpart of “Sesame Street” will be back in the airwaves, reportedly along with new human cast members and muppets.

I grew up as a child loving this program because it entertained and at the same time taught me good, clean and simple fun. This nostalgic program brings back wonderful memories of my childhood—reminiscing Kuya Bodjie’s impeccable flair at story-telling, main characters’ Pong Pagong and Kiko Matsing’s wacky antics à la Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, even Manang Bola’s fortune-telling through her perlas na bilog (crystal ball), reciting “ba-be-bi-bo-bu”; all of which seem like I had just watched it yesterday. We all had something valuable to learn and gain from each one-hour episode, in one way or another. Alas! Even the muppet seer’s mumbo jumbo incantation to summon for an answer to magically appear in her crystal ball, was actually teaching us kids vowels that time. Amazing!

Anyway, this is good news for doting parents, especially moms, as it brings a sort of reprieve from the violent and distasteful shows children get inadvertently exposed to. Everyone knows that “Batibot” used to promote sound conscientious childhood development, with each main character virtually playing the role of the eager sage teacher, imparting substantial educational and moral lessons where kids could learn from. The show had always creatively presented different ways to make learning easy and fun; and with its return, hopefully we would get to see a new generation of “Batibot Kids” experiencing that same good, clean and simple fun we ourselves once enjoyed. I’m actually interested whether the show gets an updated twist, or if they will continue to stick to the old working, winning formula. Welcome back!

In the meantime, just sing along to their classic opening theme song…

PAGMULAT NG MATA,
LANGIT NAKATAWA
SA BATIBOT,
SA BATIBOT
TAYO NANG MAGPUNTA
TUKLASIN SA BATIBOT
ANG TUWA, ANG SAYA

DOON SA BATIBOT
TAYO NA, TAYO NA
MGA BATA SA BATIBOT
MALIKSI, MASIGLA. (2X)

DALI, SUNDAN NATIN
ANG NGITI NG ARAW
DOON SA BATIBOT (2X)

TAYO NANG MAGPUNTA
TUKLASIN SA BATIBOT
ANG TUWA, ANG SAYA

DOON SA BATIBOT
TAYO NA, TAYO NA
MGA BATA SA BATIBOT
MALIKSI, MASIGLA. (2X)
